About Us
Rochford Volunteer Fire Department serves a roughly 215 square mile area of rural communities living in the western Black Hills. We are a volunteer run organization funded by the Rochford Fire Protection District, grants and donations. We are trained to assist in search and rescue, structure and wildland fires, and medical calls.
Then and Now
-
1974
The Rochford Rural Fire Association was formally organized on September 13, 1974 after a number of houses in our small town and surrounding area burned to the ground. The two closest fire departments at that time were in Lead and Hill City. Our fire district is approximately 60% in Pennington County and 40% in Lawrence County.
In 1997, a meeting was held to establish by-laws for the Rochford Fire Protection District as well as a joint operating agreement between the Rochford Fire Protection District and the Rochford Volunteer Fire Department.

Present
Construction on the new fire station (across the road from its original location) was completed in November of 2008. The land it sits on is leased from the US Forest Service which expires in 2038 and terms will be renegotiated at that time.
The station houses four fire fighting vehicles (E-1-1, E-3-1, E-6-1, T-3-1) and a Cascade Air Supply trailer. There are roughly 20 active members at any given time. But we’re always looking for more volunteers!
